Isaiah 9:6
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Advent, a season to ponder, to silently observe, to turn our attention to the incomprehensible Christ. The One who comes in unexpected and subversive ways. The ‘One who holds all things’ in the form of one who is held. The All Powerful Creator choosing to burst forth on a quiet night in a lowly town. The King of All choosing a lowly young girl to be his hidden home and usher him into the hostile world. The Perfect One joining a family line of the broken. The One called ‘Love’ stooping down to embrace the most forgotten and forlorn then rising to the place that is above all leaving not one sphere of mankind untouched. Both intimate and strong. Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God. Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. Strong enough to hold the world and gentle enough to hold a heart.
Love embodied. Love so great, it could not be contained in the vast expanse of the universe. The depths and heights could not contain it. The West and East could not hem it in. Darkness could not hide it and depravity could not quench it. It spilled out onto the broken, the downtrodden, the captives, the disappointed, the disillusioned, the weary and the alone. One silent night held within it hope for all mankind. For you, for me.
