Remembering Who We Are
Looking in the mirror, I hurriedly brushed back tears and threw my hair in a ponytail. The day had started out fine, but then with my Bible open on my lap, thoughts began to flood my mind.
I began to think about how John had forgotten to do something, my kids really needed to listen more, and me? What was wrong with me anyway?
I closed my Bible having read and prayed, but never gaining His perspective because I was holding onto mine.
John walked in and I offended him with my sharp tongue and then managed to offend every single person in the house except for the one who was oversleeping before I got a hold of myself.
So there I stood in my sweats and ponytail with tears in my eyes. The day had barely begun and everyone was mad. Admittedly, the fault was all mine.
As I stood there with shame threatening to cloud my day, I remembered my ruby necklace.
I pulled it out of the box carefully debating if I really deserved to wear it. On this particular day, it represented everything I wasn’t. I reluctantly clasped it around my neck.
You see, this little necklace was a gift to me from John and with it came a card that beautifully described everything good he sees in me. This necklace isn’t often worn on days where I feel beautiful or on days when I feel like I have it all together. This necklace often looks strangely out of place because it’s typically worn on days when I feel everything but beautiful.
This necklace helps me to remember who I am.
A strange thing happens when I begin to remember – I begin to act like who I am and the lies that threaten to overwhelm and cloud my view begin to look like the lies they are. I remember what it is I really want and Whose I really am.
Remembering makes all the difference in the world.
We need to remember who we are and Whose we are. Remembering gives us what we need to walk whole, free and moving toward restoration in this life.
Friends, Let’s remember who we are…
-We are never alone or on our own – ever. (Hebrews 13:5)
-We are dearly loved – always. (Colossians 3:12)
-We are loved beyond our comprehension. We could never be disappointed at the depth of His love. It will always be more than we can imagine. (Psalm 103:11; Romans 8:35-39)
-We are forgiven when we ask. (Hebrews 4:16)
-We are clothed in robes of righteousness. (Isaiah 61:10)
-We are given what we need from Him to live a godly life. (2 Peter 1:3)
-We are made in His image. (Genesis 1:27)
-We are a delight to Him. (Zephaniah 3:17)
-We are being restored by Him – it’s why He came. (Isaiah 61:1)
-We can act in wisdom because of the wisdom HE gives us when we ask. (James 1:5)
-We are victorious – those things in our life that hold us back CAN be healed and restored. (Romans 8:37)
Father, Thank You that You see who I really am and who You have created me to be. Thank You that You are the God who takes my broken life and delights in restoring me. Thank You that You love me beyond anything I can imagine or hope for. Help me to believe what You say about me and to see things as You do. Help me to understand my value to You and to give those things up that I am grasping so that I can hold onto You.
